Marketo paired with Salesforce is the most common go-to-market stack in mid-market and enterprise companies: Marketo runs the marketing engine — scoring, nurture, Smart Campaigns — and Salesforce is the system of record where sales lives. Most demand-gen teams have already built years of routing rules, scoring models, and campaign logic across both, so any new tool touching the funnel has to fit into that setup, not ask them to rebuild it.
Breakout does exactly that. It integrates natively with both Marketo and Salesforce, captures buying signals on your site, runs AI chat live, and pushes that data into your existing stack in a structured format your scoring, routing, and nurture automation can act on immediately.
Where existing tools fall short
Most signal-capture tools claim Marketo and Salesforce integrations, but teams running them at scale hit the same structural limits:
Sync that's only real-time in one direction — data flows into Marketo instantly but comes back on a 12-hour refresh, leaving the tool working off stale context.
Delayed sync that stalls the rep — sales waits for data to move before acting on a signal, defeating the point of capturing high-intent behavior.
A narrow field set passed to Marketo — names, reps, source, campaign, medium, content, and nothing else, forcing teams to route richer context through Salesforce as a workaround.
Enrollment triggers with no underlying context — a lead gets dropped into a single Smart Campaign with no way for marketing to drive multiple campaign types off the same signal.
Breakout addresses these through a flexible two-way sync between Breakout and Marketo/Salesforce.
Architecture: a hybrid sync model
Breakout combines real-time event triggers with scheduled batch processing, so time-sensitive signals move instantly while heavier operations run in the background.
Event-driven sync handles lead data and high-intent signals — the moment a visitor hits a workflow milestone, Breakout pushes it so Smart Campaigns, lead scoring, and routing fire immediately, with no lag. Batch processing handles bulk operations that aren't time-critical, like syncing full chat transcripts or account deanonymization data into Salesforce or Marketo, running on a 15–30 minute cadence.
Setup and authentication
Breakout connects over secure, OAuth-based APIs. For Salesforce, it uses a dedicated Integration User profile, authorized via OAuth to read and write data — passwords are never seen or stored. For Marketo, it authenticates through a LaunchPoint custom service using a generated Client ID and Client Secret, and pushes data through Marketo's REST APIs.
The read integration: real-time intelligence
Breakout performs instant lookups to Salesforce to understand who a visitor is and how to route them — the read access behind routing chats and meetings to the right rep and feeding BDR signals.
For account identification, it uses reverse-IP to identify visiting accounts and read their Salesforce attributes, so reps can be alerted when their accounts are on-site and Tier 1 accounts get prioritized for live chat. For lead identity, once an email is identified Breakout queries Salesforce for an existing Lead or Contact and pulls the OwnerID — offering a visitor a chat with their existing account manager instead of a generic rep.
The write integration: two pathways
Breakout writes data back into the stack two ways. The recommended path is Marketo-first: Breakout syncs data into Marketo via the Submit Form API (or Leads API) for lead attributes and the Custom Activities API for behavioral events, and Marketo's own automation writes through to Salesforce — while Breakout keeps direct read access to Salesforce so routing and BDR signals stay real-time regardless of how writes flow.
The alternative is writing directly to Salesforce — creating leads or updating custom fields like a High_Intent_Activity flag. This is supported, but writing to Salesforce in addition to Marketo isn't recommended: it bypasses Marketo's central sync and can create data inconsistencies. Most teams should let Marketo stay the system of record.
Deeper Marketo capabilities
Breakout logs immutable, timestamped Custom Activities directly to each lead's Activity Log — events like "Breakout – Hand Raise" that act as precise Smart Campaign triggers without layered filter logic. Through Munchkin cookie matching, it recognizes returning visitors using first-party data. And with a deferred write pattern, anonymous visitor engagement is stored internally until they provide an email — at which point their full pre-identification activity is written retroactively, so lead score reflects their entire journey.
Native calendar: meeting-booked signals
Breakout's native calendar lets visitors book meetings directly in the conversation. A booked meeting logs a "Breakout – Meeting Booked" Custom Activity carrying the assigned rep, which Marketo then writes through to Salesforce. Where that rep assignment doesn't carry through Marketo cleanly, Breakout writes it directly — an Activity on the Lead or Contact, plus an optional Task for the rep — so the meeting and its ownership always land on the record the rep works from.
How data flows: three lead-capture scenarios
Level 1 – explicit hand raise: the visitor requests a demo, routes to sales, or books a meeting. Breakout updates the lead record via the Form Submit/Leads API, logs a "Breakout – Hand Raise" Custom Activity (plus "Breakout – Meeting Booked" where applicable, carrying the assigned rep), and Marketo fires fast-track Smart Campaigns — alerting BDRs and syncing activity data, including rep assignment, to Salesforce. Where that assignment doesn't carry through cleanly, Breakout writes the Activity and an optional Task directly to Salesforce.
Level 2 – implicit lead capture: the visitor shares an email during a chat or resource download, but intent is softer. Breakout updates the lead record and logs a "Breakout – Conversation Lead Capture" Custom Activity; Marketo accumulates the behavior score or enrolls the lead in nurture, and pushes a BDR alert to Salesforce if frequency thresholds are met — say, three visits in 30 days.
Level 3 – conversation with no lead capture: the visitor chats without submitting identifying information. If they're already known via the Munchkin cookie, Breakout logs a "Breakout – Conversation Occurred" Custom Activity and Marketo updates the behavior score and syncs it to Salesforce. If anonymous, session data is held under the deferred write pattern and pushed — and synced — only once they eventually identify themselves.
Breakout is built to sit inside a Salesforce and Marketo stack, not around it: it reads Salesforce in real time to route and personalize, writes structured signals back through Marketo as the system of record, and preserves full-journey context even for visitors who identify themselves late. The result is richer, higher-intent signal for your existing scoring, routing, and nurture automation — without new manual workflows for your team.
